5Aesthetics in Japan

This book is exceedingly well written and informative for those fascinated in classical Japansese aesthetics. It is one of the best reference books available on the subject.

5A Treasure
By Charles
A brilliant analysis of medieval Japanese esthetics, full of perceptivities and surprises.

Four chapters: The aesthetic structure of waka; The metaphysical background of the theory of Noh; The Way of Tea: An art of spatial awareness; and Haiku: an existential event. Part Two has translations of Maigetsusho (on waka); Zeami's Nine Stages; The Nanbo Roku (re Rikyu); and The Red Booklet(re Basho).

The section on Zeami and on spatial knowingness in the tea ceremony are in particular good.

This ought to be read in conjunction with Izutsu's Toward of Philosophy of Zen Buddhism.
