I am buying Oster dog clippers. Do I want 1 or 2 speed clippers and how important is strokes per minute?
I am considering the Oster golden A-5 single or double speed, the Protege or the PowerMax. I have been using a Wahl cilpper with 6000spm for 4 years. I would like to upgrade but am confused by all the choices! What difference will I notice between 2000spm versus 4000spm. The clippers in that range cost twice what I paid for my 6000spm Wahl clippers. Isn't faster better? Also, I have been using plastic guide combs. Are metal ones better and do they get hot?
I use them on my 2 Lhasa Apsos. I like to keep them slightly shaggy (puppy cut?) which is why I use the combs. Their coats are always clean and tangle free when I clip.
It depends on what you are using the clippers for.
If you are only clipping one dog that is in good shape, then you may not need a super fast clipper.
I've owned single and 2 speed clippers. I'm fine with single speed, but tended to buy the most powerful since I was a pro groomer and needed the super high SPM to get through badly matted dogs and thick coats. Faster and more powerful is nice, but they do heat up faster.
Plastic combs work well on clean, brushed out coats. Metal will tend to transfer heat from the blade underneath, but they also last longer. Tho my plastic combs did well once I stopped trying to get them through any matts or thicker coat.
I've owned many Oster and Andis clippers. I have not had Wahls, but I know they have gotten better after years of only making "pet" clippers.
I was grooming up to 10 dogs a day, so you can see why strong clippers were important. If you are happy with your Wahl clippers perhaps get another Wahl clipper that is better on your hand? Some of the newer ones are lighter and quieter.
