Scissors Barber

When I was a kid, my Dad used to take me down to the local barber shop to get my hair cut. We would pull up to the striped pole, get out of the car, and walk in to a room that smelled of aftershave and men's hair products.
On the shelf were combs soaking in disinfectant, electric shears and various kinds of scissors. They even had a vibrating massager that he would slip on his hand and rub your neck with when you were all done.
We would take our place on one of those red sparkley plastic covered chairs that looked like the frame was made of chrome. On a hot day in a pair of shorts you could almost slip right off one because of the sweat on the back of your legs.
At times it was amazing how many men were there. Some were waiting in line for a hair cut. Some had already had their hair cut. Others were just sitting around talking and didn't need a hair cut. There were even times when we would come in and no one was getting their hair cut. They were all just sitting around talking and laughing.
It wasn't until later in life that I realized what a social hang out the barber shop really was. It was a place where the men would come and spend time with each other. They would catch up on the news of what was going on in the local community. They could find out where the fish were biting or what the politicians were up to. And when necessary even get a hair cut.
I believe that in order to be successful at Web 2.0 we need to have much the same philosophy as the barber. He never shewed people off so he could make more pitches for hair cuts. He always welcomed people in even if just to talk. The social aspect was part of what he enjoyed about being a barber. Even though hair cuts were how he made his living you almost felt like they were secondary.
When you become part of some discussion board or social site remember not to just pound people with your pitch. Get involved in the conversation. Find out who these people are and what makes them tick. Help them to find answers to their questions. As you create these relationships and people see that you're genuine they will be open to doing business with you.
As you help them solve problems they'll see you as an expert. When that happens they'll start seeking you out to do business with you. You've gotten to know them and they you. They feel they can trust you. You've already helped them and shown you know what you're talking about.
The real power of Web 2.0 is in the ability to pick conversations. You don't have to just get into a general conversation and hope people will talk about something related to your business. You can look for those conversations and be part of them. You can get in on specific topics that are of concern to you.
Then you can start interacting with real people that need help with real problems. You can make it a relaxed and enjoyable conversation that will result in the building of real relationships which have great potential in resulting in real business.

Can you use thinning scissors to cut your own hair?
My hair is super thick. I've had it short and spiky for a while but want a new look. I'm trying to give myself an 'Indie' do. Think one of the Arctic Monkeys or Oasis. The problem is my hair is growing OUTWARDS rather than longways! I get my hair thinned monthly but whatever barber/salon I go to they always chop too much length off no matter what I say.
Is it possible to thinn your own hair at home with thinning scissors? Even if not by myself but by a non trained friend?
i did that and messed up my hair.its best to go to the hairdressers they know what they are doing.
