Ancient Samurai Swords - The Japanese Tachi And Nodachi Swords
Japanese Tachi Sword
The Japanese Tachi are one of the Ancient Samurai Swords that are a bit longer and a bit more curved than the Katana Sword is. A Sword is considered a Tachi when the blade of the sword is placed down when being hung from someones belt. The Katana on the other hand is worn with the blade being faced upward. The Tachi eventually became outdated and was replaced with the Katana Sword.
For the most part, the Tachi was used in Battle by troops on Horseback. This sword needed to be drawn quickly in order to defeat foot soldiers. It was still somewhat cumbersome to use on the ground, however it was still considered an effective weapon when it came to ground combat. The Uchigatana replaced the Tachi eventually and is was made more for ground combat. This weapon also eventually became the predecesor of the Katana Sword.
The Uchigatana was used by the Bushido, which was the Japanese Warrior Class. The only known difference between the Uchigatana and the Katana was how they were worn and by the different blade fittings. The Mongol Invasions of of 1274 and 1281 proved that there were some flaws in the Tachi which motivated the Japanese to create the Katana Sword. Around the Sengoku and Edo Era, some high ranking soldiers that naturally evolved into the ruling class would wear their weapon Tachi Style with the blade facing downward.
Japanese Nodachi Sword
These Ancient Samurai Swords were made to be used with two hands. The term Nodachi means "field sword" in English, which definitely classifies this weapon as a Battle Ready Sword. A Nodachi pretty much as the same design and looks as a Tachi, the main difference however is the Nodachi is quite a bit longer. The Nodachi was used by Japanese Warriors on foot and was made for open land battles verses calvary. Because of the extensive length of the blade on this sword, they wouldn't work well indoors or in a close quarter combat situation.

Your list is very good, I haven't seen all the ones you've listed but the ones I have seen I really enjoyed, like Around the World in 80 Treasures, Private Lives of the Emperors, Lost Worlds etc.
there were two series about the medieval era that I really enjoyed, The Crusades, and Medieval Lives, both presented by Terry Jones, both very interesting.
And there were some series presented by Michael Wood in the 80s that I enjoyed very much, In Search of the Dark Ages, In Search of the Trojan War, and Domesday.
