Barber Haircut

"Do you have a book in you?" the slick ad asks.
For many, the answer is a resounding, "Yes!"
After my second book came out I was speaking to my barber. I mentioned the event and he asked me the title.
I told him, and in a more serious tone than that of a handicapper who had whispered an omniscient horseracing tip he declared, "I GAVE you that title!"
As I recall, one side of that haircut was worse than the other, because on some level my barber wrongly thought he was a muse.
Anyway, I was wondering a minute ago, "Why don't more people self-publish?" In many ways it's more efficient, and you certainly aren't going to reject your own work, unless you have a genuine self-image problem.
What is it about traditional book publishers that keep us aiming for them?
5 things:
(1) PRESTIGE. To be published by a major imprint means you have arrived, you are in relatively rare company.
(2) It is an ENDORSEMENT of you, as a writer. You're not an amateur, anymore.
(3) It's the MONEY, stupid! Big presses often offer advances against royalties and you have a chance to set up a nice annuity if your book is a hit.
(4) You have a shot at IMMORTALITY. Bertrand Russell, the monumental philosopher, said we have kids for two reasons: (1) Ego gratification--It's great to see "little me's" running around; and (2) The desire to survive death. Your book, like a genetic legacy, might "live" in libraries and homes for generations.
(5) FAME. You may get a chance to do international interviews with the press, radio and TV shows, and get a lot of publicity. People will tell you they tuned in and there you were!
How can self-publishing compete with the 5 lures of traditional publishers?
If you win the lottery, and they publish you, it can be sweet. But every book they buy isn't an instant hit. Most of them fail to achieve a sizeable audience.
Self-publishing, on the other hand, is a sure thing. If you want to know at least some readers will enjoy your ideas and craftsmanship, this is the way to go, and of course one thing may lead to another.
With a track record of self-published sales you might get a big house to reprint and distribute your little offering.
Clarify what you're really after and then go for it. Either way, if your book is finished and published by anyone in any quantity, you should be duly proud.
