Fake Tan-What Are Your Options?
Not only that, but they're safer, too. A fake tan became the preferred method of a healthy glow to our skin when we began understanding the potential damage of too much time spent in the sun. As a result, the instances of skin cancer have been declining for the past two decades while the popularity of fake tan products continue to grow.
Now that summer's just around the corner, here are a few tips for selecting the right product to ensure a beautiful, healthy and streak free glow. The primary ingredient in the majority of fake tanning products is dihydroxyacetone, or DHA, and they work by reacting to amino acids found in our skin cells. This interaction is what provides the "tan". While you can use these products if you're going to be outdoors and in the sun, dermatologists recommend the use of sunscreen as well. The products used for fake tans do not offer any protection from the sun's rays.
Another popular application is the new airbrush tanning methods. These are most successful when done in a tanning salon, but there are new methods available on the market that allow users to apply them at home. These can be costly, however and often, the results aren't as dramatic as those you would get in a spa or salon setting. Also, you'll need to endure a bit of trial and error to find the right one for your complexion. Otherwise, you might end up with the dreaded orange look. Remember too, start small and build from the foundation to avoid a too-drastic finished look.
It's important to do your research on the application methods. As mentioned above, airbrush tanning is the new rage, but it's not the only effective method. Each has its own pros and cons and as you might expect, the prices will vary greatly as well. Keep your budget in mind, especially if you're new to fake tanning products. Some of the fake tan methods include:
- Foam applications
- Spray applications
- Towelette applications
- Slow tanners, such as lotions
- Spa or salon applications; and
- Airbrush applications which usually require an initial investment in the equipment
Those in the industry also recommend users exfoliate their skin before using any of the methods above. They also caution against applying fake tan products after you've moisturized with other products and special attention should be paid to those areas that are typically dryer, such as knees and elbows. Finally, most experts agree night applications are better since you have the overnight hours for the product to develop. Finally, be sure to use plastic gloves to avoid the "tanned palm".
Fake tanning, or sunless tanning, as it's sometimes referred as, is an excellent way of getting that look we all long for. We equate it to health and a well lived life, after all. With a bit of forethought, research and trial and error, getting the perfect shade is easily achieved.

when you go on holiday and get a tan, what do you do about your foundation not matching your skin tone?
Im going on holiday tomorow and will definantly get a tan as i tan easily, they last for agesss!! I even have faint strap lines from July 2006!! What do I do about my foundation?
go to "The Body Shop" and if u have a tinted moisturiser they do a gel which you mix ur existing moisturiser with to make it shade darker!
It works!! and you just add as much to your moisturiser depending on how tanned you are, this takes a little experimentation!
if you use a foundation im sure you could just mix it with that too!!
