You Don’T Choose The Diamond; It Chooses You
All along, it has been said that the buyer does not choose the diamond. The diamond chooses the person it wants to be with; and if you look at the story of the diamond which has come into your family, you can’t but agree.
Will you believe it if we told you this – Scientists estimate that it takes about a thousand million years (1,000,000,000 years) for Carbon to turn into a diamond! That is the age of the little stone you are sporting in your ring!
The regular growing place for diamonds (or rather, the place where Carbon turns into diamonds) is nearly 200 kms below the surface of the earth, and the average temperature at that depth is over 2300 degrees F! Imagine that; and now we say that wearing a diamond is ‘cool’!!
The pressure at that depth is estimated to be about 80,000 Kgs per square centimeter (which could be translated into eighty tons (or eight ten ton trucks) balanced on your little finger! The sparkling stone on your little finger bore that weight actually, and that is how the Carbon became a diamond.
It is because of that heat and pressure that the atoms change their structure and get attached to each other in a way that makes the diamond one of the world’s hardest substances.
According to Mohs hardness scale, which is the industry standard in measuring hardness, diamond gets a rating of ten on ten, making it the hardest material known to occur naturally. Loose diamonds appeared for the first time in India about 3000 years ago, and only after the 3rd century AD did diamonds start becoming part of jewelry. Till then, they were only used as a mode of payment.
Battles have been waged, millions have been killed, and kingdoms have been changed over these little shiny pieces of stone. There has hardly been any better sign for power in the world, in all these millennia of human existence.
The diamond mines the world has are all there only because mother nature decided that these stones were not meant to be 200 kms below the surface. Hence, by means of volcanic explosions, and other freaks of nature, these stones came to the crust to be mined by humans and being sold as what we call ‘diamonds’ today. If there were no volcanic activity, we would not even have seen the diamonds!
1 Carat of diamond is found on sifting through 250 tons of sand, rock, gravel, and god knows what else! Every single carat of diamond in the world is found in that manner. Think about the work that has gone into finding your dream stone!
Only 20% of the diamonds that are found the world are of ‘gem’ quality, and end up being used in different grades of jewelry. All the other millions of carats of diamonds found each year end up being used in the industry as cutting, mining and polishing tools. There are hundreds of other uses for diamonds, and we won’t talk about them here.
Of these 20%, only the top 0.05% form what are called the ‘Signature’ collection, and these are the stones which are in top demand across the world. The rest of the stones are classified as ideal, very good, good, fair and poor according to the guidelines set in place by the Gemological institute of America.
By the time your diamond becomes what it is, there is so much precious stone cut away to get the diamond into the shape it is in today.
Now, think objectively and you will agree – you have no power to choose the diamond. It is the stone that endures all this battering and bruising to find you. We are certain that you will choose a loose diamond with awe the next time you come across one!
