What straight forward benefits and discoveries has come from the ISS?
Dont get me wrong, I dont mind using it as pure science platform for many different reasons. It was supposed to provide research in many different fields, from medicine to engineering and mechanics, but I havent heard of a specific thing that has come from the station, that couldnt be done on earth. Has any real science began yet, aside from high school/jr college projects that get most of the press??
Right now, I would have to say that the single biggest benefit from it is the experience it's giving us in learning to have a long-term presence in space. We're learning a lot about living in microgravity and building big things in space. We plan on building the Mars ship in space - that would certainly benefit from the experience gained with ISS.
Sure, it hasn't given Pfizer the formula for the latest medications in dealing with erectile dysfunction, but as an earlier answer posted - the ISS is still "under construction" so I feel that a modicum of patience is required in that regard.
The #1 thing about the ISS that irks me is that I haven't been aboard it yet!
