Can i put uranium in mineral oil with electronics without the uranium making heavy metal and causing a short?
im making a mineral oil cooled computer and i want to decorate the inside of the case with uranium doped items from unitednuclear.com and place UV LEDS inside to make the doped items glow. But im worried the that the low level radiation(well within safe limits) will make the oil conductive. i just wanna know if raw ore and doped glass will be safe in the oil with electronics?
Well, uranium ore will generate mostly alpha particles. Alpha particles are basically helium atoms without the electrons. While the alpha is massive and very positively charged, it will only travel about 2 or 3 millimeters in the oil before it will pick up some electrons and stabilize as a helium atom.
Uranium ore will also generate some gamma rays, but these should escape the computer case and dissipate before depositing their energy.
One thing to do would be to coat the ore in some clear finish (like polyurethane) before putting it in the oil. The finish will keep the alphas from getting into the oil.
