The cosmetic industry is a $4 billion dollar a year business. Customers are continuously trying new products: anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, face lift creams, eye creams, not to mention the wide variety of colors available in Eye Shadow, blush, lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, and coordinating nail polish. The cosmetic companies come out with spring products, summer products, holiday party products, and more to entice us to look younger and more beautiful. There are hundreds of cosmetic companies, all looking for that special niche to sell their newest, improved product.
Could that niche be to cause cancer?
Chemicals, like butylated hydroxyanisole and titanium dioxide are known carcinogens and many scientists worry that the continuous daily use-over time- causes cancer.
Dr. Sam Epstein at the University of Chicago in Illinois has spent over 40 years of research into cancer causing cosmetics and describes these as a "witches brew of carcinogens". He states that a common cosmetic cream contains 2 carcinogenic ingredients. Mascara? 3. Blush? 4. And lipstick? 5!
Why aren't these ingredients removed? The cosmetic industry states that they are in such small amounts that they cannot do any harm. Critics warn that the danger is in the day-to-day use of these cosmetics, which build up in our system (absorbed by the skin) and cause cancer.
The U.S. and Canada ban only a handful of chemicals whereas Europe has banned over 400 carcinogenic ingredients in the cosmetic industries. Why? Labeling laws are designed to protect trade secrets, not consumers. While some ingredients, even carcinogenic in nature, may be "frank" and listed on the label, many other carcinogenic ingredients are "hidden" due to patents and trade secrets.
One study in California showed that dark hair dyes double the chance of bladder cancer in women. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's cancer and death was suspected by scientists to be caused by the dark hair dye she used.
Over 40 carcinogens are used in cosmetics are actually listed on the label. Another 30 are not. According to a news report at cbc.ca/consumers/market/files/health/cosmetics/index several companies are listed as using these ingredients:

Any one know of a good eyeliner by maybelline ?
I'm about to go buy some new makeup and I love Maybelline, I have been looking for a eye liner that does not come off so easily. I normally wear brown eye shadows, sometimes pink and purple. I have big lashes so mascara is always a must and liquid eyeliner on the top, but I can never find a good eyeliner. I have Green Eyes so if you guys have any suggestions or know a good Maybelline eyeliner that'd be great!
