Skin Protection 101
Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, Kao Brands' Dermatologist and medical director of the Bay Dermatology Centre in Toronto, sheds light on common myths and misunderstandings about protecting your skin against harmful UV rays.
"I'm amazed at how little Sun Protection people use on a daily basis," says Dr. Skotnicki. "Even if you're not on the beach or in direct sunlight, you must apply UVA/UVB protection daily. It's a preventable disease, but unfortunately skin cancer is still a widely diagnosed illness."
What is SPF?
SPF stands for sun protection factor. It is the degree to which a sunscreen protects skin from the direct rays of the sun. For example, if you normally burn in 10 minutes, wearing SPF 20 – applied properly – will protect you from burning in the sun for approximately 200 minutes.
Does layering different SPF factors result in a higher overall SPF?
No. It's a myth that if you layer on your SPF that it becomes cumulative - putting on an SPF 20 and then adding a moisturizer with SPF 15 will not give you SPF 35 protection. Mixing chemicals from different products does not increase the SPF level.
If I have SPF 15 or higher in my foundation, am I protected?
People think that if there is a high SPF in their foundation, then they are protected from the sun. While there is SPF in foundation, protection is all about how much you apply. Unfortunately, you don't apply enough foundation for it to act as your only protection against the sun. I highly recommend incorporating sunscreen into your beauty regimen before you apply your make-up and any SPF in your foundation is just extra insurance against sun damage.
What are the key areas of my body that I should protect from the sun?
I always recommend protecting your whole body against the sun; however, there are some areas that are more susceptible to sun damage than others. Always pay a little more attention to areas that have thinner skin like the face, neck, upper chest and breasts. What causes freckles?
Freckles are synonymous with being sun-kissed and they are more predominant on fair skin. No one is certain as to why freckles appear and disappear but we do know the function of them. Freckles are a defense mechanism for our skin allowing it to protect itself against the sun by producing more pigment.

My Powder Foundation DOES NOT have SPF. But my foundation DOES. If I wear both, will my skin be protected?
If I wear a SPF moisturizer under my foundation, will my skin still be protected from the sun's rays, even if my foundation doesn't have SPF?

Yes - the more stuff you put on your face, the more protected you are. Especially if one of them has SPF, you're fine. Good for you for being concerned!
