To build a backyard chicken coop is not just to provide a roof over your chickens' heads; your coop should also be safe and comfortable. In short, it should not just be a house for your poultry; it should also be a home for them.
To make the best backyard coop, here are a few building tips that you might want to consider:
1) Sturdy structure. Make the structure sturdy to protect chickens from the weather and other potential sources of harm. You might use recycled materials, but this doesn't mean that you will be unable to make a sturdy structure. Start with the foundation. Make sure that it is strong enough to weather potential harmful forces.
2) Good ventilation. No matter how simple your coop is, the issue of ventilation should be carefully considered. There should be open space for inviting air in and for letting it out. Good ventilation will prevent the air inside the coop from getting stale and the floor from getting damp which could cause chickens to get sick.
3) Enough space. The coop should not be cramped that your chickens do not even have space to flap their wings or exercise their legs. Perches where they can roost and floor space to peck around should be given attention.
4) Reliable protection. In building your coop, make sure that the flock is protected, not only from the weather, but also from predators. Make it a point to know what predatory animals live in your area. Rodents, coyotes and other animals must not be able to get in and raid the coop.
5) Clean feeding and watering containers. Just providing a feeding and water dish for your chickens is not enough. Their feeding and watering areas should have enough space for all of them and must be kept clean.
6) Organized littering area. In building a coop, the area where chickens will litter should be kept away from where they feed. Your coop might be small, but it doesn't mean that you cannot separate these two important parts. The best strategy is to elevate the feeding dishes. A sloped floor will help gather the litter in one place.
7) Safe nests. Hens should be provided with a place to lay their eggs where these eggs will not be trampled when the rest of the flock is on the move. Also, create a hole near the nests where you can get your hand through to gather the eggs. This hole can also be part of your ventilation plan.
If you are to build a backyard chicken coop, make sure that you keep your chickens' comfort foremost in mind. Your coop might be pretty, but is it safe and comfortable? Make sure that it is.
