External walls finishing and painting of Lagos buldings
The beauty of a house does not lie solely with its architectural design, but also on its external finish. The allure and pleasantness of a well painted house, both internally and externally is what makes the house more complete, comfortable, attractive and likeable.
For decades, painting has been used as a preferred medium of finish for walls, whether public or private residences. It performs the function of bringing our aesthetic dreams, ideas and desires to life. Painting is employed to serves different purposes.
Therefore many reasons abound for the use of paint as a final finish for buildings and developments. Exterior and interior painted walls may therefore tell the history of a building. However, it may sometimes be deceptive as the external and internal paints may be entirely in contrast with each other. From time to time, paints with newer and better properties, colours, texture and uses are constantly being introduced into the paint market.
In contemporary times, painting has not been the exclusive wall finish. The reason for this is varied. While many people resort to paints, others prefer other media like, aluminum, glass, stones, marble, wood, pop etc. A beautiful environment is achieved by the serene beauty of houses and developments all around. Painted walls are usually due for repainting at least once very 5 years depending on the use, purpose, quality and application of the paint.
In the city of Lagos, as with many other cities and towns in Nigeria, it is common to see a large number of buildings left bare of any painting or finishing. These houses are most often rendered in cement sandcrete or just left brick bare. Their owners have proffered different reasons for this, including; creating an unattractive outward appearance to ward off prying eyes, lack of funds to complete this project etc. Quite a few of these end up using poor quality paints which instead of creating the desired result of appealing to the eyes only reflect unattractive appearance and repulsion.
One of the major focal point of the government of Lagos State is Gov. Raji Fashola's programme of beautification of Lagos State through creating a beautiful environment. In doing this, an appeal has been sent to all owners of buildings in Lagos State to repaint their houses within 60 days or they stand the chance of losing them. This order was particularly directed at houses and buildings along major streets and highways in the city of Lagos. Though no colour code has been stipulated, it is believed by all that, it will help improve the aesthetic beauty of the environment.
There have been quite a lot of reactions arising from this order. Many people believe that it is reasonable and in order and would help promote the health of the people, other kicked against it. Most houses especially tenanted buildings are never painted and those already painted are hardly ever repainted many years after.
Many Landlords, who depend solely on the rents from tenanted properties as income, are against the idea as they are of the opinion that cost of painting or re-painting their houses may eat deep into their income and they cannot bear to embark on the venture. Some, who cannot help it, may transfer the burden to their tenant in terms of higher rents. Still others, frown at it saying that the two months period is too short for them to be involved in such expenditure.
In light of the above, house owners should take the initiative and repaint their buildings. Those in this category should seek professional advice as to type, texture, quality, colour, specific use and effects of whatever paint for use in a particular building. They would also have to consider location of the property, the environs and styles common to the locality.
On the other hand, government whose effort is commendable should not burden its citizen with excessive forced compliance by way of short time limits, but to subtly appeal and enlighten the people on the need and importance of the exercise.
A longer time limit should be placed on the affected owners. If after the time limit expires, moderate fines, levies or distaining orders can be placed on defaulters.
It is also important for the enforcement officers to include experts to so as not to allow for sub-standard or haphazard work which would mitigate against this brilliant idea.

How can I strip the patina finish off my copper coffee table?
We have a copper topped coffee table from Crate and Barrel that has a hideous brown patina finish. One night I laid a wedge of lime from my drink on it and when I cleaned up the copper was bare, like a fresh new penny. We have tried using lemon, lime, vinegar, ketchup, and cola to remove the finish, but nothing stays in place so now we have smears and streaks and splotches where the patina is gone and others where it is not. Can someone suggest maybe a paste or more sturdy substance to use that will stay in place overnight to remove the finish? I know some stores sell a copper acid wash, but that would be a lot of work because we would have to take the top off the base of the table and wash it by hand in the shower or backyard.
The patina is caused by a form of corrosion. The citric acid in the lime is what caused it to come clean. You will need to remove the table top and put something on it (concentrated citric acid perhaps) to get it to a consistent finish. As this will take several hours or more to work, you'll need to set it up some place that the top can be horizontal. Perhaps place it across two milk crates or sawhorses.
Once there, you need to rinse it and ensure that no impurities remain. Then find a clear coat that is intended to be applied directly to metal. (This is often called a DTM sealer.)
If in doubt, I suggest you call around to various decorators and ask them to recommend a shop that makes copper decor items.
