Choosing Eyeliner
The type of eyeliner you choose depends on a number of factors, including the steadiness of your hand and the overall effect that you are looking to achieve. The aim of eyeliner is to outline and emphasize your eyes. The best way to do that is with a thin line of color just above your upper lashes and just below your lower lashes. Here is a quick rundown of the different types of eyeliner and their advantages.
If you have close set eyes, for the inner lid, pale colors should be used. While on the outer lid, darker colors should be used. Blend from pale to darker shade using brush, blending darker shades up and out. Use eyeliner on the outer half of the eye. Eyebrows should be shortened at nose to help create a wider gap between the eyes.
If you have deep set eyes, use pale colors only on the eye socket; use a slightly darker shade above the crease of your eye socket. Use eyeliner on both the upper and lower lids, blending in to soften the lines. Mascara or artificial eyelashes is beneficial to help highlight the eyes further.
Applying liquid eyeliner is generally much easier than putting on powder-based eyeliners. This is because liquid eyeliner flows more naturally onto your eyelid and the surrounding skin than powder-based eyeliner. Applying powdered eyeliners, if you want to get an even application, generally requires the user to pull on their eyelid. Liquid eyeliner can be applied gently without pulling on the eyelid and still result in an even coating. Removing the tugging, pulling and maneuvering not only saves you work and prevents you from missing portions of your application, but it can also greatly reduce the chance of you smudging your eyeliner application while trying to get your fingers out of the way.
To start, grab your black gel eyeliner (it's easiest to see and practice with black) and a small, narrow makeup brush. Hold your eyelid up with your fingers while applying the eyeliner from the bottom, making sure to push it through the lashes. With the brush there, wiggle it slightly side to side to apply the eyeliner, then move to the next part of your eye. Dragging the brush won't work here, since you'll end up brushing the eyelashes All Over the place, and it won't look natural.
Using powder-based eyeliners can result in small clumps of the eyeliner forming along your eyelid, ruining the smooth effect that most eyeliner applications attempt to achieve. This is not necessarily a fault of powder-based eyeliners, as it is most often a result of excessive eye movements or an unsteady application. If eyeliner is used on a consistent basis, clumping may also result from small amounts collecting on the surface. This can be caused by the applicator itself. Liquid eyeliner, due to the fact that it’s liquid, does not clump, and therefore does not have this problem. Quality liquid eyeliner should flow as smoothly on the twentieth application as it did on the first.
