One facet of a well-designed website is its colour scheme. selection of colour is vital in creating the look that the site's owner wants to portray. if the look of the site doesn't meet the user's expectation, then they will leave & probably won't return to the site. This is often the reason why a web-site is not doing quite as well as it should.
Being aware of colour perception can make your life easier when deciding on a colour scheme for a website. knowing which colours can irritate and which can calm is important in giving the user the right impression & experience of the site. why would you want to anger a user if you want them to buy from your web-site?
Colour balance & contrast is another good technique. It can be used to point users in the direction of to certain pages on the website.

White is a very minimalist colour. linked to simplicity, cleanliness & purity, it can be used to highlight images.
Yellow is linked to comfort, liveliness, energy & joy. it is a lively colour that can be used to highlight desired areas on a web page.
Red can summon feelings of passionate, courage & strength. it is a strong colour & if used in small doses, its credible for highlighting issues.
Red is a very evocative colour & it conjures up images of hell, love, fire & warning. it is probably the best colour to draw attention.
White could be used to create contrast by being used as a background colour. the areas of white inbetween components of a webpage are known as negative space. White is linked to cleanliness, peace & light.
Black is a very strong colour & is linked with sexiness, intensity & elegance. it is a very popular colour on photography websites, because black creates contrast between colours within photos.
Purple has connotations of royalty, indulgence & luxury. it is not a commonly used colour in designing for the world wide web, perhaps because it's known as a girly colour.
Creating the idea of earthiness, nature & poverty, brown is really similar to green in that it can be used to give the site a relaxed feel.
Orange is associated with fire, enthusiasm, heat & hazard. But its also a truly friendly & young colour that is used frequently in websites targeted at youth culture.
Tradition, stability, depth & cosmos are all associated with the colour brown. But its truly similar to green in the fact that its also linked to trees, nature & calm.
Having knowledge of the psychology of colour can give web designers the upper hand when you're designing for a client. simply knowing which colours create which effects can make a website successful. there's nothing worse than creating a site which looks fantastic but does not connect with the end user. using colour cleverly to create feeling, contrast & balance can change a boring website into a great one.
