The White Room…inspiration From The Foot Of Snow Outside My Window!
I thought that I would write about designing a white on white room today. Many thoughts run through my head of personal experiences that once made me feel frustrated. After all, white is white isn't it? How hard can it be? I had a client who requested a meeting with me to decipher between here shades of paint for her new room. They were called alabaster, white blush and feathered violet…all of which looked like white, white or white from a distance. They were all the lightest hues on the color spectrum that took them into the tonal colors of perhaps grey, red, and purple. And IT DID MATTER.
It also mattered when a friend walked into our living room and insulted me by suggesting that I lacked design talent because of the enormous use of white in my own living room! What did he know anyway?
Many people in the past have referred to white as the “absence of color”. It is important to know that white comes in a wide range of shades and tones. The idea of an all white room may sound like a very boring attempt. On the contrary. If it is done correctly, it is a major accomplishment and produces a gorgeous room!
Here are some examples of what can be done with various shades and textures of white. The most important trick in using a lot of white is to find tonal compliments like I stated above…finding the ROOT color in your white selection. Does the paint selection have grey undertones? Then perhaps you should choose something with pink undertones for the sofa. Perhaps the coffee table has a high liquor finish to add a texture contrast, then maybe the chairs are done in a white mohair. The window treatments could be done in a buttery white silk and the lamp shades in cream or ivory. The rug selection could be a cool white woven wool…etc.
It is all about layering and not being afraid of too little or too much. It will be important to stay within a range of whites, selecting four to five “colors” and then adding a variety of emphasis in the play on texture to complete the room. Remember that white is a color and that it can be season-less, despite what may be falling outside your window tonight!
